Infrastructure & Mooring
Croatia has heavily monetized its coastline. Free anchoring is increasingly rare, especially in popular zones (Hvar, Vis, Korčula). You must budget significantly for overnight stays:
- ACI Marinas: €150 - €300+ per night for a 45ft catamaran. Includes water, shore power, and showers.
- Concession Buoys: €60 - €120 per night. Often the best compromise between security and cost.
- Town Quays: Often heavily contested by 2 PM in high season.

Weather: The Bora
The Bora is a katabatic wind blowing from the Velebit mountains down to the Adriatic. It is cold, dry, and strikes violently. It can accelerate from 10 knots to 50 knots in under 20 minutes. If the local forecast (DHMZ) mentions Bora, do not leave port. Ensure your vessel choice has robust ground tackle.
Licensing Strictness
Croatia requires two things to charter a bareboat:
- A license listed on the official Ministry registry (typically an ICC).
- A VHF Radio Operator's License. If you lack the VHF ticket, you must hire a skipper, regardless of your sailing resume.
